Dragon Boat Racing and the Milton Keynes Festival
Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and the fastest growing water activity in Britain today - as well as the most fun! Up to 16 people paddle each 40’ boat with a drummer at the front beating time and a helm at the tail steering a straight course. No previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit!
Gable Events has joined with Age UK Milton Keynes to bring you the 14th spectacular Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival. The Festival is open to everyone and up to 60 crews are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course, watched by several thousand spectators. Willen Lake offers a superb venue for racing and a fabulous day is guaranteed with bankside entertainment, music, food and fun activities for all the family.
Standard entry includes:
- Dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment
- At least 3 races per crew
- Music and entertainment
- Souvenir programme
- Trophies for the top five crews, the best-placed mixed crew (minimum seven ladies), the crew raising the most money for Age UK Milton Keynes and the ‘best dressed’ crew
- Medals for the top three crews
- A £300 voucher towards a celebratory meal at The Swan in Salford for the crew raising the most money for Age UK Milton Keynes
Age UK Milton Keynes
We are a local independent charity working in the borough of Milton Keynes. Thanks to the support of local people, and fundraisers taking part in the Dragon Boat Festival, we provide services and direct support to over 14,000 people and their families every year.
Our Handyperson and Gardening Service, Hospital Aftercare Service, Relief Care sitting-service, Community Home Visiting Service, Toenail-cutting Service and 20 lunch clubs all make a real and positive difference to people’s daily lives, helping them stay independent and enjoying later life.
We also run a free, independent and confidential advice and advocacy service at seven locations across Milton Keynes and within people’s homes. Our advisers help sort out benefits and money worries, as well as answer questions about housing difficulties, health care problems and more. Our Advocacy team helps isolated and unsupported older people represent their own interests, resolving worries and other difficulties that cause great unhappiness and can affect their health. We need to raise £80,000 to help fund this crucial service.
Last year our staff and volunteers helped older people make successful claims for benefits amounting to £1,077,932, money that will be spent on improving the lives of many people in our community.
16% of the population of Milton Keynes is currently over the age of 60, and in just six years this figure is expected to grow from 40,000 to nearly 60,000. Thank you for supporting the Dragon Boat Festival and for any donations you are able to make to support our vital work. Money raised in Milton Keynes stays in Milton Keynes.
